Actually Tried It: An AI-Generated Travel Route to Jeju’s Canola Fields

Two open notebooks comparing handwritten and AI-generated travel plans on a desk.

In the last post, we talked about how using ChatGPT to plan detailed travel itineraries is blowing up on social media. So, I decided to try it myself.

For this experiment, I chose one of the most beautiful spring destinations featured in my spring travel recommendation post: Jeju Island, Korea — famous for its vibrant yellow canola (rapeseed) flowers.

To plan this trip, I used two different methods:

  1. Prompt-based itinerary planning

  2. Using the GPTs 'Travel Guide' tool

Jeju Itinerary Using Custom Prompts

Prompt Example:
"I'm planning a spring trip to Jeju, South Korea. Please create a one-day travel itinerary focused on viewing canola flowers in full bloom in late March to early April. Include local food recommendations and optimize the route for efficient travel."

Itinerary Result:

Bright yellow canola flower fields stretching toward a seaside village in Jeju Island.

  • Morning: Drive along the Noksan-ro Canola Road → Brunch at Café Seopji (great view)

  • Afternoon: Walk around Seongsan Ilchulbong → Visit a lesser-known canola field popular on local blogs

  • Evening: Pick up local food at Dongmun Market

Tip: The route was created assuming you’ll have a rental car, so the schedule felt very realistic.

Jeju Itinerary Using GPTs 'Travel Guide'

Input:
“Plan a day-trip itinerary in Jeju Island, South Korea, centered around canola flower viewing in late March to early April. Include local food spots and Instagram-worthy photo locations.”

Coastal Village View in Jeju Island

Itinerary Result:

  • First stop: Sanbangsan Canola Field (great for photos)

  • Midday: Hike the Songaksan Olle Trail + Try seafood ramen at Marado

  • Wrap-up: Visit café 'Afternoon Garden' for night views

Strengths: Each place came with a short explanation about what makes it special, and it even suggested transport options.

Prompt vs. GPTs — A Quick Comparison

Category Prompt-Based GPTs Travel Guide
Customization Highly flexible Easy to use, but some preset limits
Detail Level Gets better with longer interaction Offers polished results instantly
Local Vibe Often more authentic via blog references Safer, more general suggestions

A travel notebook, pen, coffee, and a map of Jeju Island laid out on a wooden desk.

This little test showed me how powerful AI can be in helping you brainstorm and build a travel plan — even if you've never been there.

Especially for those who are new to planning, GPTs are intuitive tools that provide travel-ready answers in seconds.

Next time, I might compare this plan to my actual travel experience to see how close AI got to the real thing!
