How to Use ChatGPT to Plan the Perfect Travel Itinerary — Like a Local
These days, TikTok, Instagram, and Reddit travel communities are buzzing about one trend:
planning ultra-specific travel itineraries using ChatGPT.
Forget vague suggestions or endless browsing — people now type in a simple prompt and get day-by-day plans tailored to their interests, pace, and even budget. Whether you're into hidden foodie spots in Tokyo or a 3-day art tour in Paris, AI is changing how we prepare for travel.
In this post, I’ll show you two ways to make the most of ChatGPT when planning your next adventure:
-
Using detailed, customized prompts
-
Using specialized travel GPTs (like the “Travel Guide” GPT)
Let’s get started.
1. Creating Itineraries with Smart Prompts
Prompts are the heart of ChatGPT planning. The more specific you are, the better the itinerary.
Here are three examples that have gone viral on social media:
🧭 Theme-Based Prompt
“I’m visiting [City/Country], and I love [history, food, art, shopping]. Build me a local-style itinerary around this theme with hidden spots and local favorites, day by day.”
💸 Budget-Friendly, Efficient Prompt
“I’ll be in [City] for 4 days. My budget is [$X]. I want to visit [places]. Make a time-efficient itinerary that minimizes transfers and keeps costs low.”
🍜 Foodie Prompt
“Give me a list of restaurants in [City] that locals love, not touristy. Organize by breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with one must-try dish and why.”
Each of these works because they:
-
Add personal context
-
Ask for local-style insights
-
Break down plans into manageable chunks
2. Using GPTs Designed for Travel
ChatGPT now supports “custom GPTs” — specialized AI tools trained for specific needs. And yes, there are GPTs made just for travel planning!
What You Can Do:
-
Search for GPTs in the Explore GPTs tab (look for keywords like “travel” or “planner”)
-
Input basic info: destination, number of days, preferences, must-see places
-
Let the GPT do the work!
Why They’re Useful:
-
They’re optimized for building real itineraries
-
Many give results in table or map format
-
Some even pull in updated, crowd-sourced suggestions
Tips to Make Your AI Trip Better
-
Always include duration and timing (e.g., “I land at 2 PM, need an activity before dinner”)
-
Mention your travel pace (slow vs. packed)
-
Ask follow-up questions like “Any good food near stop #3?”
-
Combine multiple prompts — food, activities, budget — in one session
Honestly, planning a whole trip from scratch can feel overwhelming — you don’t even know where to start or stop, right?
At some point, I even thought about booking with a travel agency...
But then again, I just couldn’t give up the freedom of traveling on my own 😅
That’s why I really think this method is worth trying — and I truly recommend it!
In the next post, I’ll compare two real-life AI itineraries: one created with prompts, the other using a travel GPT.
Let’s see which one wins.
